Dr. Anita Renau Bralock
Class of 1995
Dr. Anita Renau Bralock has enjoyed a stellar career
as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences, Director
of Nurse Midwifery, as well as a Researcher. After graduating
Summa Cum Laude from Drew’s prestigious Nurse Midwifery
Program in 1995, Dr. Bralock proceeded to achieve a Ph.D.
in Nursing from the UCLA School of Nursing.
While Dr. Bralock received offers for full-time faculty
positions with various Ivy League Universities, she decided
that her expertise would be best utilized at CDREWU.
“I came back to Drew to give back to the community.
My education at Drew opened doors for me and allowed me
to gain respect within the nursing and patient community
during a time when African American women only comprised
10% of the nurse midwifery work-force. If it weren’t
for Drew I may not have received my Midwife Certification.”
Dr. Bralock currently shares a passion for mentoring
current CDREWU students and conducting research. As incoming
students seek an education that will ultimately lead them
to a career of assisting the community, Dr. Bralock seeks
to embrace these new students and make them feel as though
Drew is their home away from home.
Her second passion involves researching “the factors
which promote condom use, especially among Hispanic and
African-American women. Due to greater sexually transmitted infection
rates in the inner-city, she has found that minorities
in those areas are largely at risk of contracting HIV.
Dr. Bralock hopes that her research will identify methods of informing and
educating inner-city women regarding the important need of condom use in order
to protect themselves and others.
