PLANNED GIVING
- Charitable Remainder Trust - If you are disappointed in the yield from your current investments in the stock and bond markets, and want to avoid the capital gains tax should you sell, try a charitable remainder annuity trust. This plan allows you to transfer money, securities and other assets to a trust that will then pay you or another beneficiary an income for life or a specified period. At the time of death of the surviving beneficiary, the remaining principle of the trust goes to Charles Drew University.
You can pattern your trust to meet your particular needs. First, you can decide the amount of money that you will transfer into the trust. Next, you determine the amount of income that you would like to receive from your trust. The rate of income received from the trust must be at least 5 percent. The rate that you select may depend on the amount of beneficiaries you select and their ages. Finally, you determine the type of trust that fits your needs.
- Annuity Trust - Pays you a fixed dollar income annually, semiannually or quarterly.
- Charitable Unitrust - This type of trust is similar to a gift and an investment plan. You place assets in the trust and you and/or your beneficiary receive a lifetime income from them, Charles Drew University receives the remainder. The amount you receive as income is a set percentage of the value of the trust assets, recalculated annually.
- “Net income with makeup” unitrust - This version of the unitrust allows for income distribution of either the actual net income earned or a fixed percentage of market value, as recalculated yearly, whichever is less.
- Lead Trust - This is a way to pass assets to your family with significant estate tax savings, while making a gift to Charles Drew University. You can give a fixed annual amount to Charles Drew for a fixed term of years or the life of one or more individuals.
Upon conclusion of the established term, the trust terminates and, according to the terms of the trust instrument, distributes its remaining assets (called the remainder interest) back to you or to one or more individuals that you have specified.
